Evaluating winter malting barley grain yield with fractional green canopy cover

چکیده

Because of growth in the craft brewing industry, farmers eastern United States are planting winter malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to meet demands for locally sourced grain. However, given that is a relatively new crop this region, basic agronomic information relating stand assessment needed. This particularly relevant as climatic variability from extreme temperature fluctuations during and spring can reduce stand, creating need estimate grain yield potential. The objective research was evaluate relationship between stem counts, fractional green canopy cover (FGCC), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) yield. Trials were established at five site-years Ohio, where seeding rate treatments 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 2.5 million seeds acre−1 used simulate range poor excellent plant stands. All methods conducted Feekes 5 stage. Stem counts correlated with FGCC NDVI measurements (r = .76 .74, respectively). (R2 .67) .65) accounted greatest Specifically, ≤5% corresponded 27 39 bu acre−1, whereas 10% 60 89 acre−1. Fractional should be considered tool, it reduces labor compared counting techniques.

Simulation of yield and quality of malting barley

A computer simulation model was developed to determine the likely response of grain yield and quality of malting barley crops to differing availability of water or nitrogen (N) and differing soil and climatic conditions. The model was validated for New Zealand conditions by comparing the results of model simulations with data from malting barley crops grown in the Manawatu. Simulations were the...

Effect of Barley yellow dwarf virus Infection on Yield and Malting Quality of Barley

Barley yellow dwarf (BYD), the most common and widespread virus disease of cereal crops worldwide (14), may be caused by any one of several Barley yellow dwarf viruses (BYDVs) of the family Luteoviridae. Transmitted by at least 25 aphid species (24), these viruses historically have been classified into two subgroups and five strains based on aphid vector specificity and efficiency (31). However...

Photosynthetic Efficiency in Juvenile Stage and Winter Barley Breeding for Improved Grain Yield and Stability

Different winter barley cultivars showed various levels of genetic tolerance when they were exposed to different stress conditions. Therefore, investigations of interaction among genotypes (cultivars) and environments give useful information concerning yield stability and quality in barley (Blum, 1989; Ceccarelli et al., 1998, 2000; Lalić et al., 2007, 2009). Drought conditions frequently give ...
